Protecting Refugees in Malawi

“The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) through its regional office for South Africa, is the implementing partner of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in the refugee camp of Dzaleka, in Malawi. Action is oriented to provide education from pre-primary through adult vocational education.

The JRS is an international Catholic organization with the mission to accompany, serve, and plead the cause of refugees and forcibly displaced people. It is present in 57 countries with programmes oriented to provide assistance to refugees in camps and cities, individuals displaced within their own countries, asylum seekers in cities, and those held in detention centers.

As of the end of 2009, more than 500,000 individuals were direct beneficiaries of JRS projects. Education, emergency assistance, health care, livelihood activities, and social services are its main areas of work .”
