Preventing and Healing Hiv / Aids : The Buddhist Response

In partnership with UNAIDS and within the framework of Buddha´s teachings and 
ethics, the Sangha Metta Project covers an important education activity which consists of (a) teaching monks, nuns and novices about HIV/AIDS, equipping them with modern 
participatory social management skills and tools to take part in HIV/AIDS 
prevention and care at the community level, and (b) educating youth groups and raising their awareness on HIV/AIDS and narcotic.

World Bank and Faith-Based Organizations: Experiences of Partnership for Development

The Development Dialogue on Values and Ethics (DDVE) is a small unit at the World Bank whose purpose is to contribute to analytical work, capacity development and dialogue on issues related to values and ethics. DDVE, founded in 2000, is working with FBOs for reducing poverty in developing countries. Action oriented research is being carried out in various fields such as: protecting vulnerable groups, improving access of the poor to health and education services, and better using the resources generated by migrants in benefit of their families in their countries of origin.

Fighting Poverty: The Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme (KENSUP)

This is a key core poverty Programme addressing the challenge of housing problems affecting the majority of the population who live in slums and informal settlements in Kenya. The Ministry of Housing of Kenya has a wide range of stakeholders in the execution of this project, among them are UN Habitat, other international organizations, NGOs, CBO and also FBOs ( i.e. the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi).

Nothing But Nets

The United Nations Nothing But Nets campaign was created to distribute millions of long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets to children in Africa as a form of preventing malaria. Among the partners and supporters of this project are the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Union for Reform Judaism and the United Methodist Church.

CALLING FOR A CLIMATE CHANGE AGREEMENT

The United Nations Climate Conference will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 7 to 9 December 2009. The TckTckTck project is a global alliance of civil society organizations, trade unions and faith groups calling for a fair, ambitious and binding climate change agreement at that conference.

Historic Istanbul Declaration on the Muslim Seven Year Action Plan on Climate Change.

Muslim leaders, scholars, civil society members and government ministries from Islamic civil society have agreed in Istanbul to spend the next seven years planning serious commitments to protecting the natural environment, and combating climate change. The plan was drawn by Earth Mates Dialogue and is part of United Nations (UN)/Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC) Seven Year Plan Initiative.

Fighting Poverty: Kenyan Youth Trained In Low Cost Building Technology and Other Areas.

The project on Hydraform building technology, a low cost method, trained youth from informal settlements in Kenya. The youth involved will also be trained in conflict management, business development, peace building skills, and in forming cooperatives. This is a project between UN-HABITAT’s Youth Empowerment Programme and the Nyumbani Village Training Centre in Kitui District. The Centre is supported, among others, by USAID, the Rotary Club, and the Catholic Diocese of Nairobi.

Protecting Refugees in Malawi

“The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) through its regional office for South Africa, is the implementing partner of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in the refugee camp of Dzaleka, in Malawi. Action is oriented to provide education from pre-primary through adult vocational education.

The JRS is an international Catholic organization with the mission to accompany, serve, and plead the cause of refugees and forcibly displaced people. It is present in 57 countries with programmes oriented to provide assistance to refugees in camps and cities, individuals displaced within their own countries, asylum seekers in cities, and those held in detention centers.

As of the end of 2009, more than 500,000 individuals were direct beneficiaries of JRS projects. Education, emergency assistance, health care, livelihood activities, and social services are its main areas of work .”
